Light up Hospice for Christmas

Come and help us light up Hospice for Christmas on Sunday 6 December 2009, 7:30-9:30pm at 52 Beach Rd, Te Atatu Peninsula.

Waitakere-based MC and entertainer, Greg Ward, will lead an unforgettable evening of entertainment for all. Enjoy soul-reviving jazz with the Waitakere Brass Brand, watch Chinese lions come to life as the E-Pacs Team dance to the sounds of drums and gongs, and be inspired by the award winning Rangeview Intermediate Kapa Haka group.

Transform your little ones into angels, butterflies, and spider man under the skilful hands of face painters in fairy gowns. Children will also have the opportunity to meet Santa.

Rejoice in the Christmas spirit with carol singing and light candles to send loving thoughts to those who are not with us.

Once night falls, lighting decorations on Hospice House, along with Christmas trees on the balcony, will sparkle and shine with the magic and mystery of Christmas – this night and every night until Christmas Eve.

Light up Hospice for Christmas is a free community event for young and old, families and people on their own. Bring a picnic chair, candles and let’s light up Hospice together.

Christmas Remembrance Trees (STARS)

In one of the stars, I shall be living.
In one of them, I shall be laughing.
And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing when you look at the sky at night.

~ The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Hospice West Auckland’s Christmas Remembrance Trees (STARS) appeal will take place from 7-24 December 2009. Christmas trees will be located at Westgate, West City, LynnMall, and Kelston shopping centres, West Wave and PSIS. More trees will be at Helensville’s Unichem, outside the ASB at Te Atatu Peninsula and at Lincoln Rd’s Mitre 10 Mega. Trees will also be at Titirangi and Coatesville local markets and Christmas parades in Henderson, Te Atatu, Helensville and Kumeu.

Shoppers will be invited to write a message to a loved one on a silver or golden star decoration, hang it on the tree, and make a donation to Hospice West Auckland.

Outrageous Fortune fans will have an opportunity of winning a great prize. Donations of $10 or more will go in the draw to win a walk-on part with a friend in the next series.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the Christmas Remembrance Trees (STARS) we have 3 hour shifts available during the day Monday - Sunday and in the evenings from 19 December 2009. So far we have recruited 230 volunteers but still need another 50 people. Areas hardest to fill are at the Kelston Shopping Centre, outside Farmers at Westgate and outside Mitre 10 Mega Lincoln Road. We also have a few spaces at LynnMall.

If you are able to do one or two shifts please call Sam Dick on 834 9750 extn 729 to discuss your availability - or email samd@wah.org.nz

A Wandering Star
Len had no home. He described his life as being lived off the grid, and himself as a wandering star who had the strength not to be crushed by the system. Len's friends could no longer provide the level of care he needed, so we had been called to help. It was many years since Len had seen a GP, so we assured him that we would stay with him. He reached for our hands and whispered, 'I trust both of you.'

All Blacks Booties for Hospice

Yvonne Adams was an excellent knitter, sewer and embroiderer, using her talents to fundraise for Hospice West Auckland. Her hand-knitted baby All Blacks booties were a best seller at the monthly craft stall at LynnMall. She produced a pair every week for many years despite suffering from poly-arthritis in both her hands. Her sister, June Richards, said "it was very painful for her to do anything with her hands. She could only do a certain amount at a time, but she’d get it done." CLICK HERE to read more.
