He's a good sort, he's our Bud
Passionate, reliable and ‘quite a character’ are just some of the descriptions I received about Bud when I started asking around. In his early 70’s with the real name Filmer Semadeni, the man we fondly know as ‘Bud’ has been volunteering with Hospice West Auckland since March 2008.
Bud has a passion for driving, as well as for doing his part in the community and spends huge amounts of his own time each week volunteering as a patient driver.

Craft for a cause
It's been coined as one of the biggest new trends, the rise in handcrafts and an appreciation for the homemade, handmade, original and recycled. There are a group of ladies at Hospice West Auckland though that were well ahead of this trend.
For three Friday mornings out of four, the Hospice West Auckland Craft Group meets at Hospice House to share a cuppa, have a natter and 'craft for a cause'. One the other Friday of each month, they set up their stall down in Lynnmall and sell their wares to the public.
This is no small side project either; according to Alexis Smith, Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Hospice, the Craft Group has raised over $10,000 towards palliative care in the community over the last year.

Tiaki: compassionate support for carers
At Hospice West Auckland, we recognise that carers play a vital role in community palliative care and our weekly tiaki groups are here to nurture these special people. Tiaki means to look after, nurse, care and protect.
Social Care Manager, Trish Fleming says: "It is hoped that the group will be interactive, and that knowledge and experiences shared will be beneficial and promote a supported, caring environment." The group themes encompass not only care of the patient and family, but care of self as well. Tiaki provides a safe forum to share the joy and challenges of caring for a family
member and an opportunity to meet others in similar roles.
