Look out for our 'Christmas Stars' this December
Each year Hospice West Auckland runs a very special Christmas fundraising drive called ‘Christmas Stars’.
In December special Hospice West Auckland Christmas trees are set up in shopping areas around West Auckland. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, members of the community are invited to support Hospice West Auckland by writing a message to a loved one who cannot be with them at Christmas on one of the special Christmas stars, and then hanging the star on the Hospice Christmas tree.
Over the month of December the Hospice Christmas trees will gradually be covered with these special handwritten ‘Christmas Stars’, each holding a special message.
‘Christmas Stars’ is a very special fundraising drive for Hospice West Auckland - the ‘Christmas Stars’ not only help to raise much needed funds enabling Hospice to continue to care for patients and families throughout the greater West Auckland area, but they also provide an outlet of remembrance for families who may be experiencing a Christmas without a loved one.
This is a very special year for Hospice West Auckland as it is our Silver Jubilee (25th anniversary). To celebrate this milestone all our stars will be a silver colour this year.
Keep an eye out for our ‘Christmas Stars’ trees and support Hospice West Auckland in the following locations in West Auckland this December:

Light Up Hospice
Unfortunately our Light Up Hospice street party had to be cancelled on Sunday night due to weather conditions but some performers were still keen to come so we held an impromptu function inside Hospice House and we turned on the lights at dusk after our remembrance ceremony.
Those who did not know the event was cancelled were welcomed into Hospice House or, when it got a bit full, stood outside to listen to the music.
Our lights will be on each evening from now until the new year so feel free to come down to see them anytime!

It’s in the Bag
To celebrate our 25th Anniversary and thank our founding Board Members, we held a 1987-themed cocktail party called ‘it’s in the Bag’ on Friday 18 May. Rower and Hospice supporter Rob Hamill MC’d the event, which also featured speakers Paula Bennett, our Chairperson Linda Cooper, and Hospice founder Beverly Revell.
Paula Bennett spoke about what she was doing 25 years ago, and her vision for the next 25 years. Linda gave us an insight into what drew her to Hospice, and Beverly told us stories about warm-hearted patients from the wrong side of the tracks.
Highlights of the evening were Beverly cutting the celebration cake made by our volunteer Hilda, the ’25 years of memories’ photo exhibition around the walls of Hospice, the 1987-themed waitresses serving 1987-themed finger food, and the Amazing Travelling Photo Booth.
Thanks to everyone who has supported Hospice West Auckland over the past 25 years. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

Don't Cry Because it's Over, Smile Because it Happened
When Maxine King’s daughter Heather and daughter-in-law Holly arrive at Hospice House to speak about their experiences of Maxine’s illness and death, it’s clear they’re both strong, loving women who place family at the top of their priority lists. And as they talk about their family matriarch it’s obvious where these attributes came from. When she died at just 68 Maxine was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and her caring nature extended well beyond her own brood. To read the full story, click here.

When our "petrol head" patient Wayne was told he's not allowed to drive any more, the Chevy mad car fiend said he'd just have to drive his car up and down his driveway. When we told Jim McCurdy from The Chevrolet Enthusiasts Club of New Zealand about Wayne's predicament, he thought he could do better than that and took Wayne up for a spin to Helensville in his magnificent 1939 Chevrolet sedan. He's a good sort, he's our Bud
Passionate, reliable and ‘quite a character’ are just some of the descriptions I received about Bud when I started asking around. In his early 70’s with the real name Filmer Semadeni, the man we fondly know as ‘Bud’ has been volunteering with Hospice West Auckland since March 2008.
Bud has a passion for driving, as well as for doing his part in the community and spends huge amounts of his own time each week volunteering as a patient driver.

Craft for a cause
It's been coined as one of the biggest new trends, the rise in handcrafts and an appreciation for the homemade, handmade, original and recycled. There are a group of ladies at Hospice West Auckland though that were well ahead of this trend.
For three Friday mornings out of four, the Hospice West Auckland Craft Group meets at Hospice House to share a cuppa, have a natter and 'craft for a cause'. One the other Friday of each month, they set up their stall down in Lynnmall and sell their wares to the public.
This is no small side project either; according to Alexis Smith, Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Hospice, the Craft Group has raised over $10,000 towards palliative care in the community over the last year.

Tiaki: compassionate support for carers
At Hospice West Auckland, we recognise that carers play a vital role in community palliative care and our weekly tiaki groups are here to nurture these special people. Tiaki means to look after, nurse, care and protect.
Social Care Manager, Trish Fleming says: "It is hoped that the group will be interactive, and that knowledge and experiences shared will be beneficial and promote a supported, caring environment." The group themes encompass not only care of the patient and family, but care of self as well. Tiaki provides a safe forum to share the joy and challenges of caring for a family
member and an opportunity to meet others in similar roles.
